M.A.S.A. was formed in Turku in 1994 when four guys who had played in various bands (for example HC Andersen, Kumikristus, Mahtavat Lämpöpussit, Odessan Portaat, Psychoplasma, Shoplifters, etc.) thought that because of their mental health it was necessary to put together a band.

Original idea was to "make some kind of noise", but after some rehearsals and a little bit later after some changes in the line-up band style lived and searched it's shape. Finally when Tommi Saha came to play the bass and brought with him more roughness to band sound and when Paulina Ahokas with her viola widened band's soundscape things clicked together after the Shut up and Look Stupid mini-CD. The other members were: Ville Mäntynen, Olli Nikoskelainen and Raimo Pesonen.

Although band usually plays raw electric guitar rock they have also had some "funny" side projects. For example in Down By The Laituri festival in 1997 they had a 12 piece line-up which did perform a half an hour jungle-industrial-noise composition One Second. In autumn 1997 Mothers played an unplugged set of their songs, many people thought that it would be a mission impossible - but it wasn’t.

Band's first single to Hiljaiset Levyt was Pause / I'll be Your Sister. It is a fine example what Masas is all about. A-side is hypnotic and rhythmic masterpiece, which has a wonderful soundscape, particularly Paulina's violin colours the sound nicely. I'll be Your Sister is Masa's version of not-so-well-known Motörhead classic - filled with raw sound wall, it's loud, it's noisy and snotty, but... ah, still so beautiful.

In spring 1998 Nikoskelainen left the band and was replaced by Toni Stranius (he had played earlier for example in Xysma). Right after this the band made a short European tour and played also in this year's Down By The Laituri.
